Where to stay in Saint-Malo for the spring tides
Updated on 16 July 2026
In Saint-Malo the sea level swings by more than twelve metres on big-coefficient days — one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe. Within a few hours, the same hotel window looks out on waves hammering the Sillon sea wall, then on an emptied bay where people walk out to the islands.
Spring tide dates are known years ahead, and regulars plan their trips around them. This guide gathers what you need to do the same: the 2026 calendar, which neighbourhood to sleep in depending on what you have come to see, and the addresses that genuinely make the most of the tide.
Coefficients and spring tides, briefly
The tide rises and falls twice a day. Its size is measured by the coefficient, a French scale running from 20 to 120. Below 70, nothing much happens. From 90 upwards it counts as a spring tide. Above 100, Saint-Malo is transformed: high water licks the top of the sea wall, low water uncovers hundreds of metres of foreshore, and you can walk to Grand Bé without wetting your feet.
The strongest coefficients cluster around the spring and autumn equinoxes. In 2026 three episodes dominate the year: 19–22 March (coefficient 104), 17–19 April (105, the year’s maximum) and 11–13 September (102).
Picking your neighbourhood
The Sillon. Three kilometres of sea wall facing open water, and the only hotels in town whose rooms look straight onto the waves. If the tide is the reason you are coming, sleep here.
Intra-Muros. The old town inside its ramparts. Hardly any rooms with a real sea view: you stay for the lanes and the shipowners’ houses, then climb the rampart walk to watch the bay — the best viewpoint in town, twice a day.
Saint-Servan. South of the walls, around the Solidor tower. Village feel, gentler prices, and the Rance estuary for a different take on the tide.
Paramé and Rochebonne. The same dyke, continuing east. Same sea, same promenade; prices drop as you get further from the ramparts.
Dinard. Across the estuary. You sleep with Saint-Malo’s skyline in the window, and the little ferry crosses in ten minutes.
Setting your dates
The calendar below lists every 2026 episode with its coefficient. For the two equinox events, allow several months’ lead time on sea-view rooms: the dates are public, and demand follows.
One last thing. High and low water shift by about fifty minutes a day; before heading onto the foreshore or out to the islands, check the official SHOM tide times (widget further down this page). The sea comes back in fast here, and every spring tide brings the rescue services their share of stranded walkers.

What is a “spring tide” and a tide coefficient?
The coefficient (20 to 120) measures the tide's amplitude. From 90 upwards it is a spring tide: the sea rises higher, falls lower, and uncovers miles of foreshore. In Saint-Malo, home to one of Europe's largest tidal ranges, a coefficient above 100 literally reshapes the landscape twice a day.
When are the spring tides in Saint-Malo in 2026?
The strongest episodes of 2026: 19–22 March (coefficient 104), 17–19 April (105, the year's maximum) and 11–13 September (102), with a dozen other episodes at coefficient 95 or more spread across the year. The full calendar is on this page; always check the official SHOM tide times before any outing.
Which area should I pick to watch the tide rise from my room?
The Sillon seafront is unbeatable: the sea wall faces the open sea and its hotels look straight onto the waves. Intra-Muros offers the walled-city atmosphere but few rooms with a clear sea view; Saint-Servan and Paramé are quieter and more affordable, minutes from the show.
How far in advance should I book for a spring tide?
For the equinox episodes (March and September), early: sea-view rooms along the Sillon sell out months ahead, because the dates are public knowledge. For “ordinary” spring tides (coefficient 95–100), a few weeks is usually enough, except in summer.
