Saint-Malo spring tides, March 2026: the equinox event

From 19 to 22 March 2026 the coefficient peaks at 104 in Saint-Malo, one of the year’s highest. This is the equinox tide — the one that fills the seafront hotels and brings out the photographers, because March adds what summer never provides: low raking light and the last of the winter swells.
What a day of the episode looks like
At high water, the sea rises to within touching distance of the top of the Sillon wall. Given swell and a westerly wind, waves come right over it — the plumes of spray the town is famous for. In calm weather, the sheer level is already something.
Six hours later the bay has emptied by several hundred metres. You can walk dry-shod to Grand Bé and Petit Bé, foragers head out with buckets and rakes, and the foreshore uncovers its mussel beds. Then the flood returns, and the cycle starts again for the evening.
Where to stay on those dates
The closer your room is to the sea wall, the more of the episode you get — nights included, when you can hear the swell through closed windows. The Sillon hotels sell out months in advance for these dates, which every regular has pencilled in. Intra-Muros makes a good base five minutes’ walk away; Paramé runs along the same dyke for less.

The equinox tides account for a good share of the year’s accidents: walkers cut off by the flood, onlookers too close to the wall on swell days. Check the official SHOM tide times before going onto the foreshore, leave a real margin for the walk back from Grand Bé — and if the sea does leap the wall, watch it from a safe distance, behind shelter.
